I'd heard that herons will poke out the eyes of koi, but not always eat them...not sure if raccoons leave any evidence. Egrets sound/are so pretty, I'd almost feel glad to feed them...but herons are exquisite, too. (That's why I'm using regular ol' "feeder goldfish" for now.) For me, kingfishers are the problem as well...they fly overhead regularly all summer, but so far haven't found my little "pond". (I live on a large river, so I guess they have better things to do.) It's fun to read your blog...glad I stumbled upon it! :)

Lisa, I'm not sure about the raccoons. I've had several koi disappear and I think it's either been raccoons or egrets. I've seen both around. Thanks for the links for the ladyslippers.

You have a lot of nice natives in your yard! I like the pond, too...have you had any trouble with raccoons? I tend to keep my water gardens in old was tubs on legs to keep the nosey raccoons out. If you want to try growing ladyslipper orchids, I have a source here and here.

It's so simple, and it never occurred to me, to look at the garden from the vantage point of the windows and doors of the house, I mean, I do look out them every day, but I hadn't thought of readjusting the garden to fit the site lines a bit better. I have a new project for spring!

I wanted to thank you for stopping by my blog and identifying the W-Burg Catalpas. Your landscape looks great. Anytime someone goes beyond the "green moustache" of hollies by the front door, it thrills me. I also really like the fern garden. I noticed in a previous post you had a picture of Big Mama. I wrote a sort of "obit" for her that I posted a few days ago. I just recently found out about her existance and am jealous you have seen her in person.

I came here from the cosmos;) You have a grand blog and real way with words. I want one of each you pictured. I have a new home and garden and it's expensive. I can relate to your soil conditioning. Your home is so southern and I love it.
